If your student needs a more flexible daily schedule due to health issues, CVA might be a great fit!

Aiden, class of 2024, shared his CVA experience with his former homeroom teacher, Julie Engeland:

"I started CVA in the 7th grade because I couldn’t go to class daily. I was struggling from migraines, headaches, and kidney stones along with other health issues. Switching to online made it easier to get work done when I felt good. Mrs. Mandie Frizzell was a great teacher and helped me get through middle school. Working online did make it hard to do a lot of the reading and working on the computer on my bad days. Mrs. Julie Engeland helped me by reducing long reading assignments and giving me extra time to finish work. She made things easier and helped by pushing me to keep going. I was able to earn my diploma and would like to work as a vet tech or maybe digital forensics. I have CVA to thank for helping me graduate."
Meet the Author
On March 4th, Ruthanna Frizzell hosted an Author Talk for her Monthly Student Group Chat sessions. The featured author was Sujin Witherspoon, a talented author who published her first book, which was available in bookstores and on Amazon beginning in January 2025. Sujin shared about her school experience, some struggles she had, and how her mom was the catalyst for helping her learn to love to read. She shared how she never gave up, even after several years of hearing no. The CVA Students also had the opportunity to share their favorite book and a question they had for Sujin.
Sujin’s book, Bingsu for Two, is a wonderful read, and was thoroughly enjoyed by a few of Ruthanna Frizzell’s older students. At the end of the group chat, these students had the opportunity to ask Sujin specific questions about the book and questions focusing on her writing process specifically for this book. Both students agreed on their favorite character, which is a fan favorite they were told by Sujin! This time was priceless and will be a highlight of their educational experience. Their excitement for the book inspired Sujin and reminded her of why she loves to write.

Some CVA student and parent reflections:
"Yesterday’s call with our guest author was very inspiring for my kiddos. My son and I particularly loved how she shared her struggles with reading and writing from a young age and how she explained it’s ok not to like every book you read. We also loved how she shared about everyone’s pace being different and that is ok....Now he is asking to get another book from the series from the library."
"My daughter was truly inspired to write her own book! Immediately after the call, she got out pieces of paper and got to work. She is in 1st grade and had her 3rd-grade brother edit for her. She is really enjoying it! Thank you for a great experience for our kids!"
"That was awesome thank you so much It has inspired me and I'm excited to start working on my own book."

Student Spotlight!

Mrs. Rolfe's 3rd Grade Student, Beau I., rocked the Star Wars Cantina song at his guitar recital! His family answered the following questions about Beau’s musical interests:

How did Beau become interested in guitar? Dad is a guitar player and never had a reliable band, so, he birthed them! Beau is the bass/cello/piano player and his older brother Wade, is an accomplished drummer. Beau's little sister is only five years old but screams super loud, so she's definitely our singer :)

How long has Beau been taking lessons and playing guitar? He has been playing since he was six.

How long does he practice each day/week? Beau practices 4-5 days a week. In total, he puts in hours every week to his music (Bass + Cello + Piano).

Is there a reason he chose to play the Star Wars Cantina song? The theme of the recital was songs from the movies. Star Wars is one of his favorite movies, so it seemed like a good fit.

How did he feel after his guitar recital? Accomplished. Many of the other kids at his skill level are much older. We are very proud of him and his work.

What would he tell other kids his age about playing the guitar? He would tell them that it has taught him to work hard and focus. It's not easy at first, but with dedication over, time you will see results. He would also tell him it has been a lot of fun.
The Middle School AMARYLLIS SCIENTIFIC CHALLENGE 2024 was a success!

It’s always fun to participate in a scientific investigation, but this one was both competitive and BEAUTIFUL! This competition was open to all Middle School CVA science students. In December, our young challengers planted Amaryllis bulbs. Using the scientific method, they tested their green thumbs and recorded their findings to determine which grew the tallest and had the most blooms. We had over 20 participants, and 12 of these competitors joined in on the February 5 Amaryllis Challenge Group Meeting where we shared our findings. It was determined that although winning is fun, real-life problem-solving was where “GENUINE” science happens!

During our meeting, students shared various successes, challenges, and the greatest growing tricks and crazy experiences. (NOTE: if you participated in the challenge - feel free to share your experiences/solutions in the comment section below – Even if you missed the meeting.)

Winners were determined in the Tallest, Most Blooms, and Most Creative Name categories. And the winners are.....

Tallest Amaryllis: 1st place -Freedom Takoda.
Runners up: 76.2 cm; Xavier Sosa, 74cm; Victoria Avdeyev 73.66cm

Most Blooms: 1st Place Savannah Rothwell 10 blooms.
Runners up: Victoria Avedyev 8; Stanton Pannek 5.

Most Creative Amaryllis Names: 1st Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - Kelly Pannek;
Runners Up: Sir Spouts A lot by Brielle Schlimme;
Esmerelda by Victoria Avedyev;
Sir Vivor by Theoden “Ace” Hodgson

If you missed out this year, no worries – We will have another Amaryllis Challenge next year! Look for details from your middle school science teacher in November 2025.

CVA Skill Building Club Wrap-Up!

We wrapped up our first round of Skill-Building Clubs in December, and it was a wonderful experience! K-5 students connected weekly to learn and discuss important topics like communicating with others and identifying feelings.
Families shared that their students loved having the opportunity to socialize, meet other CVA students, and learn useful skills.
Our amazing CVA K-8 School Counselor, Krysten Proszek, led the groups.
Here are some pictures of our Skill-Building Clubs in action.

Student Spotlight:
Where are they now? Celebrating the Achievements of Mubasheer and Nura Joban

Mubasheer and Nura Joban are twins who were enrolled in CVA from 2013-2017. They chose CVA because their parents wanted them to have a traditional learning experience with books, not online schooling. This approach really helped them organize their thoughts and work through different subjects such as math on paper and in a setting that allowed them to learn at their own pace.
They were homeschooled until the end of spring 2017 (8th grade), after which they began high school at Eastlake High School in Fall 2017 (freshman). After being in a home school setting that allowed them to flourish in their academics, they wanted a chance to interact with peers around them. In 2019, they started the Running Start program at Bellevue College in their Junior year of High School. With this program, they were able to graduate from high school with the President’s Award of Educational Excellence as well as an Associate’s degree in Arts and Sciences with high distinction at Bellevue College in 2021. They continued to pursue their education at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Nura graduated from UW in 2023 with a major in Psychology, earning summa cum laude honors. She took a year off to work as a counselor with the YMCA. She started graduate school in 2024 at the University of Washington, majoring in Child and Adolescent Psychology, along with an internship as a youth and family therapist at Youth Eastside Services.
Mubasheer graduated this June (2024) with honors in Business Information Systems and immediately continued with a master’s in Information Systems. He is also gaining a Certification as a personal trainer and plans to start a personal training gym while also continuing our family business as a tour leader.
We're so proud of the accomplishments of our former students, Mubasheer and Nura! We wish them all the best in the future!
Tis the Season for SCIENCE!

“The 2024 CVA Amaryllis Bulb Scientific Challenge” is in full swing! Your middle school science teachers are finding BEAUTY in the holiday season by sharing a colorful and festive scientific investigation opportunity. This fun scientific investigation is open to any CVA middle schooler, but students must purchase their own Amaryllis bulb (typically $5-$10 each at the store).

BONUS! The middle school science teachers are offering this assignment for extra credit assignment in their science courses. For instructions and a lab report, please check with your CVA middle school science teacher or visit their Teams page.

The middle school science teachers have their own competition to see which one has the Amaryllis bulb that grows the fastest or has the most blossoms within a four-week period. Stay tuned… We will post the results after our Winter Break. Pictured (L to R) are our amazing middle school science teachers: Wendy Stenbeck, Lynnette Franks, Mandie Frizzell and April Beck-Friends
Students in Taylor Spencer’s class meet for an optional weekly Social Club. In this session, they are working together to solve riddles and clues for a virtual escape room!
Other students join a weekly Minecraft Club or a Photography and Art Club.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
November is National Native American Heritage Month

We honor and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and traditions of Native American peoples. Take some time this month to learn about the diverse contributions Native communities have made to our society, and to reflect on their enduring influence in shaping the world we live in today. Visit this site for more information:
